What is an RTO and what does it do?

A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) is a provider and assessor of nationally recognised training. Only RTOs can issue nationally recognised qualifications and - where appropriate, access Government training subsidies. See below for more detailed RTO guidelines.

RTO guidelines:

Training providers must meet the Australian Quality Training Framework 2007 (AQTF 2007) standards before they can register as an RTO.
An RTO must state its scope of registration including:
(a) the training or assessment that it will deliver
(b) the fields or industries in which it will deliver training or assessment
(c) the maximum level of qualifications it will be issuing to participants
RTOs must renew registration a minimum of once every five years. This is done with the relevant state or territory registering authority at least every five years. The registering authority can audit an RTO at any time during its period of registration.
RTOs include: TAFE colleges and institutes, adult and community education providers, private providers, community organisations, schools, higher education institutions, commercial and enterprise training providers, industry bodies, and other organisations that meet registration requirements.
